O FAROL

O Farol, as you know it today, first opened its doors in Bueu in the midsummer night of San Juan in 1983.

But that was not the beginning. In the years before O Farol opened, a young Manolo and Elena carried out a couple of experiments by running a small ‘chiringuito’ during the week of the neighbourhood fair in Banda del Río. It was just a ground floor venue with some makeshift tables and chairs, padrón peppers, local wine, and not much else, apart from a great deal of excitement and the seed of an idea.

That idea took shape in the following months, crystallizing into a tavern with a very simple and clear vision from the start: good food, good beer, and good music in a typical, charming, and welcoming place.

The idea was clear, but the name was not. That is why, when Manolo and Elena opened their place in the summer of 1983, it was a tavern without a name. But they did place a steel lantern (‘farol’ in Spanish) above the entrance. Over time, it was the locals themselves who decided that this spot, where they liked to go for a drink with friends, should be called O Farol.

New tapas started arriving, pizzas (with a special mention for our most popular creation: the octopus pizza), beers from more and more countries, and additional taps, until in 2005 O Farol decided to grow, adding the neighbouring premises to the original, now connected through a beautiful stone arch.

Over the years, O Farol became a modest classic of life in Bueu, taking part in as many social and cultural activities as possible and even organising music festivals for more than 3,000 people.

It was in 2019 when O Farol went beyond the local borders, opening another place in Vigo, in Praza de Compostela, with the firm intention of keeping the same proposal and spirit as the original.
